In 2009 my career path took a turn. The principal at my children’s elementary school approached me to help with a new group on campus, Safe Routes to School. Being new to the school, she was looking for someone who knew the community well and would help set realistic goals and expectations. First, I used my teaching experience to help develop programs that fit into the school curriculum and put students first. Then came the task of engaging the community to support students. Working with local leadership and cultivating support from the broader community helped grow the program from a school-based effort to the founding of the non-profit, Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Safe Routes to School. This organization now serves over 5000 students at eight schools and impacts alternative transportation across the community. Building relationships with a variety of stakeholders and developing a relevant message provided a connection to the cause and proved to be the key to community support. That was the start of my experience in community engagement that still shapes what I do today.
